Stems

Stems are the parts inside of a faucet that turn the water on and off and adjust the temperature of the water, every manufacture back to the 1800 had some type of stems in their faucets. They generally are brass constructed, or today are brass lead free (some manufactures have either a chrome or polished brass plated stems). Stem assemblies are made with the following components: a worm drive, a bonnet, packing, packing nut, bibb washer, bibb washer screw, and bonnet gasket. Please note: that there are differences between hot and cold stems, hots generally are right-handed thread and close clockwise, cold stems are generally left-handed threads and close counterclockwise. If you have a faucet and it has round, square or cross handles typically you need two hot stem. If you have a faucet with lever handles typically you need a hot and cold stem. The only difference in the stems is the rotation otherwise all stems are made from the same material in the same faucet.
